Daily Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival & Chongming Dongtan Wetland
- Morning (08:00–10:30) : Hotel pickup in downtown Shanghai. Drive 1.5 hours to Chongming Dongtan National Nature Reserve — a Ramsar-listed wetland and critical stopover for migratory birds along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway.
- Afternoon (11:00–17:00) : Guided walk along the reserve’s designated birding trails and boardwalks. Focus on wintering geese, ducks, and iconic large waterbirds (e.g., Oriental Stork, Black-faced Spoonbill). Visit the reserve’s observation tower for panoramic views of tidal flat flocks.
- Evening : Stay overnight at a guesthouse near the reserve; enjoy local farm-to-table dinner with fresh river seafood.
Day 2: Full Day at Chongming Dongtan Wetland
- Dawn Session (06:00–09:00) : Head to the wetland’s core area for peak bird activity. Target rare species like Oriental Stork(Occassionaly) and Eastern Marsh Harrier, which are most active at sunrise. Look for small passerines like Reed Parrotbill hiding in the reed beds.
- Midday (09:30–12:30) : Rest at the reserve visitor center; review bird checklists and share photography tips with the guide.
- Afternoon (13:30–17:30) : Explore the reserve’s secondary trails to spot woodland species like White’s Thrush and Japanese Tit, which inhabit the wetland’s edge forests.
- Evening : Return to the guesthouse; optional stargazing (Chongming has low light pollution).
Day 3: Nanhui Dongtan & Lingang Coastal Wetland
- Morning (07:00–12:00) : Check out of the guesthouse; drive 2 hours to Nanhui Dongtan Coastal Wetland — a top site for migratory shorebirds during spring (April–May) and autumn (Sep–Nov). Target high-priority species: Spoon-billed Sandpiper,Nordmann’s Greenshank(Occassionaly), Along with many other waders .
- Lunch (12:30–13:30) : Local seafood restaurant near the wetland.
- Afternoon (14:00–17:00) : Continue to Lingang Wetland Park — a man-made wetland with diverse habitats (ponds, grasslands, woodlands). Look for Terns; Gull-billed Tern, Whiskered Tern,Wintering Ducks, Crested Myna. Raptors like Peregrine Falcon and Merlin are often seen hunting over the coast.
- Evening : Drive back to downtown Shanghai; stay at a city-center hotel for easy access to the airport/train station.
Day 4: Urban Birding at Century Park & Departure
- Morning (07:30–11:00) : Visit Century Park — Shanghai’s best urban birding spot. Explore the park’s lakes, woodlands, and flower gardens to spot Red-billed Blue Magpie,Vinous-throated Parrotbill,Pale Thrush,Eye-browed Thrush,Gray-backed Thrush, Asian Tit, Chinese Blackbird, Yellow-billed Grosbeak. Common urban species like Light-vented Bulbul and Spotted,Oriental Turtle Doves are also abundant.
- Lunch (11:30–12:30) : Casual meal at the park’s café or nearby restaurant.
- Afternoon (13:00 onwards) : Hotel pickup and transfer to Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) or Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station for departure.

- Transportation
- Private car with a driver is recommended (all sites are accessible by road; some places in Nanhui on the coast has construction sites, may block the way from time to time).

- Gear Recommendations
- Binoculars (8×42/10×42), spotting scope (20–60×), camera with 400mm+ lens.
- Hiking boots are ok,no need to gear for waterproof shoes, no chance to get muddy since tidal flats is restricted to go down. sun hat, and insect repellent (summer).
- Permits
- Entry permits for Chongming Dongtan Nature Reserve are required; we can include this into the tour package.
