Itinerary
This round-trip tour departs from and returns to Chengdu, with itineraries including: a flight to Chongzuo in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region for photographing the White-headed Langur; subsequent travel to Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (commonly known as Shangri-La) in northern Yunnan to shoot the Yunnan Snub-nosed Monkey; a further flight to Chongqing to track the François’s Langur; and finally, a visit to nearby Jiuzhaigou to shoot the Sichuan Snub-nosed Monkey before returning to Chengdu.
Upon arrival, drive to Wawu Mountain for the wild Red Panda, then drive to nearby Giant Panda National Park in Wolong for Giant Panda Shooting(Please be noted this National park is very big, and we will choose to visit Bifengxia in Ya'an county and Wolong Valley in Wenchuan County.)
Giant Panda National Park (GPNP):
Officially established in October 2021, Giant Panda National Park stretches across Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu Provinces in central China, covering a total area of 22,000 square kilometers—more than three times the size of Yellowstone National Park.
As the core habitat of wild giant pandas, it harbors 1,340 wild giant pandas, accounting for 71.89% of the world’s total wild population. The park integrates 73 nature reserves and boasts extraordinary biodiversity, home to rare species like the Sichuan Snub-nosed Monkey, Golden Takin, Snow Leopard and endemic plants such as Dove Tree and Chinese Yew.
Nestled in the transition zone of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and Sichuan Basin, it features dramatic landscapes of high mountains and deep valleys. It is not only a vital ecological barrier in the upper Yangtze River basin, but also a world-class destination for wildlife photography and nature exploration.
Bifengxia Giant Panda Base
Nestled in the lush Bifengxia Scenic Area of Ya’an City, Sichuan Province, the Bifengxia Giant Panda Base is a core branch of China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, officially founded in 2003 and expanded in 2008 as a sanctuary for pandas displaced by the Wenchuan Earthquake.
Spanning 1,074 mu (177 acres) in a semi-wild natural habitat with fresh air and abundant bamboo, it is home to over 80 giant pandas of all ages, including world-famous returnee pandas from overseas (e.g., Tai Shan from the US, Fu Long from Austria) and iconic gift pandas like Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan.
Wolong Valley Giant Panda Base (Shenshuping)Nestled in Gengda Town, Wenchuan County of Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan, Wolong Valley Giant Panda Base (core of Wolong National Nature Reserve) is the world’s largest giant panda breeding & rewilding base, officially opened in 2016 with a total area of 2,250 mu (370 acres).
Sitting at an altitude of 1,700 meters—the natural native habitat of giant pandas, it houses over 70 giant pandas of all ages, including the iconic returnee panda superstars like Fubao (from Korea), Xiao Qiji (from the US), Yiyi (from Malaysia) and Bili (from Japan). The base features four key zones: Outer Ring Panda Pavilions (adults), Inner Ring Pavilions (sub-adults), a beloved Panda Kindergarten (1.5-year-old cubs) and a Rewilding Training Area for panda release into the wild.
Far less crowded than Chengdu’s base, it offers a serene viewing experience with fresh mountain air, lush bamboo forests and no altitude sickness. Integrating panda conservation, scientific research and eco-tourism, it’s the premium destination to witness pandas in a near-wild natural state in western Sichuan.
Flying from Chengdu to Nanjing and drive to nearby Chongzuo city for shooting White-headed Langurs, stay at the local nature reserve eco-lodge.
Chongzuo is the world’s premier destination for photographing wild White-headed Langurs, offering unparalleled access to these rare primates in their natural karst habitat. The best shooting spots are concentrated in the Banli Section of the national nature reserve, adjacent to the biodiversity research base led by Peking University professors.
Prime Shooting Times: 8:00–11:00 AM and 15:00–18:00 PM (peak foraging hours; avoid midday heat in summer, opt for before 9 AM or after 16 PM).
Key Tips: Use a Long-lens to capture their dynamic leaps on cliffs; follow rangers’ guidance (they track monkey groups via surveillance for higher sighting rates). The autumn mating season (Oct–Nov) brings frequent group interactions, creating vivid shooting scenarios against the golden karst backdrop.
Flying from Nanning to Chongqing for François’s Langur, staying at the local Nature Reserve Hotel, Where bird hides/blinds for Golden Pheasant and Temminck's Tragopan is available,
After photographing the François’s Langur, we will drive back to Chengdu before taking a high-speed train to Jiuzhaigou County. There, we will visit a newly established nature reserve dedicated to the Sichuan Snub-nosed Monkey — a site that is only open to visitors from April onwards. As a high-altitude location, its exact annual opening date is subject to weather conditions.
Note: The traditional viewing site in Pingwu, located in eastern Sichuan, has been closed to the public since August 2025 due to unconfirmed reasons.
Flying from Chengdu to Lijiang or Diqing airport in Shangri-la, drive to Yunnan Snub-nosed Monkey National Park, stay at local Nature Reserve Eco-lodge.
