Heilongjiang-Ji’lin-Inner Mongolia
Overview
As a critical breeding ground, this region hosts a vast majority of the migratory birds that winter in southern and southeastern Asia. Come spring, the boreal forests, marshlands, and river valleys burst with life as returning breeders establish territories, court, and raise their young, offering birdwatchers front-row seats to intimate, rarely observed breeding behaviors. When migration seasons roll around—both in spring (as birds head north to breed) and autumn (as they embark on their southward journey)—Northeast China transforms into a bustling avian crossroads. Countless species make stopovers here to refuel and rest, turning its wetlands, coastal mudflats, and forest edges into temporary hubs teeming with activity.
